1.Where do you live in 2020? Please describe the place and the surrounding environment.

Not far from the coastline, close to the North Sea, I can see the stormy ocean from my windows. Lista is a flat landscape open to the sea. We have about the highest rate of sunny days in Norway, but very windy. Even in Summer the weather can be cold and stormy. Since my childhood I have been fascinated by the rocks formed by water and sand. That is probably a reason for why I work with stones as material for polished sculptures. My grandfather was a famous boat builder. Using wood as material for sculptures, I feel like I am giving him a contribution, even if my sculptures are not like boats, more like a combination of boat forms and waves.

500 meters from my home is Lista lighthouse in which I for over 30 years run an art gallery in one of the houses by the lighthouse, and in the surrounding landscape. This surroundings includes the farmers cultural landscapes with cornfields and gras fields with sheep, cows and horses, even alpacas imported from South America. The nature close to the sea is mostly untouched by humans. Miles of white sand beaches, coastlines with rough rocks and mountains steeping into the ocean has inspired my interest for form and visual art.

2.How does the COVID-19 pandemic affect you personally in your country and its countermeasures?

In February 2020 I just bought my tickets for a new visit to Kunming. I have been in contact with TCG Nordica as senior adviser, and I have been artist and pedagogic consultant for Trinity Church Art class in Kunming. Because of Covid 19, the travel was cancelled and I got my ticket money back. I had to realize the new situation that I have to stand by from Norway, no personal visit. In May the situation in Norway was chaotic. May the 17th is the great celebration day for our nation. Usually, we celebrate with processions with great numbers of children who carry Norwegian flags. No weapons. This year it was not possible. I got the idea to place 1-2000 flags on a gras field not far from the lighthouse. This is a demonstration of solidarity, identity and freedom, and has nothing to do with nationalism.

In the same period, I placed hundreds of white flags in front of the chapel, the flag of truce. That means a symbol for peace, love and understanding.

3.Where is one of the places you enjoy most this year? How do you spend your time there? can you describe what it looks like?

I have one studio for sculpturing and one for painting. In Wintertime I prefer to work in the studio for painting because this has heating in the floor and the temperature is comfortable. On stereo I am listening to music. I just got an old Yamaha Electrone Organ (from the 70thies) to play with tunes I like to hear. My paintings come from acrylic colors bought in an art shop in Kunming, all colors, except from green. This is one of my gimmicks that I don’t have green pigments. You all know the green comes out of the other colors. In my last series of paintings I have been working with colors from dark to light, an illustration to Jes. 9: “The people who walks in darkness, shall see a great light.”

Another important place for me is the seaside. Working at paths along the coastline I can see, hear, smell and feel the nature elements. Where the sea meets the land is a very creative place for meditation and inspiration.

4.Where is the farthest place you have been this year?

My car is a van with beds, shower, wc and kitchen. That means I can make a travel out of my aera, even if corona makes restrictions. This Summer I travelled up north to Levanger where I met my wife and we together drove small roads into the mountains. Spectacular scenarios when sun and rain changed over the great mountain forms.

5.Who do you live with in 2020?

I live with my wife in Lista. We are both in the middle of our 70thies. My cat came from nowhere and has adopted us as his people. He is very much like a Russian Violet, green eyes, no other colors than violet blue grey. He is a master of self-discipline, doing just what he wants. He teaches me how to take care of my body, just one stretch after a lot of sleeping. No gym studio.

6.How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect the way you work?

The Covid 19 situation cancelled exhibitions. My installations outdoors was my main works in 2020, plus painting the hope. I was invited to create a Christmas installation in full hight, showing the holy family, placed in the center of Gjerdrum. When the great nature catastrophe came to Gjerdrum , this installation was for many people a memory place.

7.Has your work been promoted in some way?

The flag installations were immediately documented in the Norwegian official TV, local and countrywide. Local newspapers were giving two full pages reportage. The Christmas installation was ordered and promoted by the church and documented by local newspapers.

8.Are you more anxious this year than in previous years? If so, how do you relieve your anxiety?

My wife and me are together in walking tours in the Lista landscape. We have deep talks, sitting on a piece of wood which has come in from the sea, we have a cup of tea and bread and butter. We laugh and asking each other what we will do if one of us dies. Just now we are waiting for the vaccine. Some people say: Don’t take it. Yes, I am afraid, praying the good Lord to take care of us, our friends the people in the world.

9.Recommend some movies or books you have seen this year (or a poem), you can briefly explain why.

When the Chinese worldwide known pianist Lang Lang plays Beethoven, the heaven is here. The Asian touch together with the European sound opens doors. Music open doors. When I’m in the dark, Bach’s Toccata and fugue on a great pipe organ takes me out of darkness into the light!

My favourite films are produced by the controversial Danish film director Lars von Trier. «The idiots» from 1998 is a very experimental, very deep psychologically and social drama about integration of mental handicapped people in our society. All Trier’s films are deep and dangerous! His last film I cannot see. It is too terrible about the human evil nature.

When I want to see something fun, I still go to Denmark. In English you can see the comic Victor Borge. He plays the piano so fun! When he plays together with the famous flute virtuoso Michala Petri, I cry!

My friend and colleague Roger Wagner from the exhibition The Matter Matters, wrote this poem to my installation Go-Stop-Go:

Red is stop
And go is green
There are no choices in between.

The sun is red
The earth is green
The air we breathe
Is in between.

We cannot stop
We will not go
If earth and air
Become unclean.

For blood is red
Yet hope is green
And all choice now lies in between.

10.Have you ever imagined what human life would be like after the end of COVID-19 pandemic?

This pandemic shows how scientists, artists, politicians, families, friends, neighbours all over the world can go together in solidarity. After this, the solidarity must continue. No boarders for love, no end of understanding.
